New Zealanders show solidarity with Israel
Over the past six weeks, since the brutal slaughter of Israelis and other nationals on the 7 October 2023, and the kidnapping of 239 babies, children, men, women and the elderly, New Zealanders have gathered together to mourn, reflect, remember and grieve. In towns and cities across the nation from Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton, Hastings, New Plymouth, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill, Kiwis have come together to stand in solidarity with Israel and the Jewish community. While the public lighting of the War Memorial Museum in Auckland ended in a fiasco, buildings were lit by citizens in Auckland and Wellington.

Much of the current focus is to raise awareness of the plight of the hostages. Hamas is holding approximately 238 abductees in complete denial of their rights and in violation of international law. They are withholding all basic humanitarian rights from the kidnapped hostages and do not allow access to assess their state and provide medical treatment. Billboards have been lit up, petitions started and vigils will be held until the hostages are released.
